SHIN PAIN
Shin pain is a common complaint amongst athletes, particularly runners. It is most commonly found at the front or inside of the shin bone.
Shin pain can be caused by any number of issues. The tibia may be under constant stress resulting in a possible stress fracture. The surrounding muscles can be overused causing swelling or pain. Bony lining may occur which is the point where the muscle inserts into the shin bone and can become inflamed and painful. These issues can be the result of muscle imbalance, direct injury/trauma or sudden onset of physical activity or overuse.
Your podiatrist may recommend a number of treatments depending on the cause, stage and severity of the injury. Some possible treatments include rest, ice or heat, footwear assessment and advice, stretch and strengthening exercises, orthotic therapy, or kinesiology taping (rock taping).
